Dr. Cynthia Maguire

Greetings!

A clinical psychologist by training, I have worked with adults facing a broad range of issues. Special focus areas for me have been depression/anxiety, PTSD, sexual trauma, and military family challenges. Please note that I work exclusively with adults (18+) and do not offer couples therapy or family therapy.

Life is tough, and I can offer you experienced, calm, objective help in moving forward—be that toward acceptance or change. I would be honored to join you on your journey toward a happier and more effective you.

Clinical Psychology Services

  • If you suffer from panic attacks, persistent worry, fears, phobias, or generalized anxiety, help is available.

Anxiety can feel overwhelming, making it difficult to relax or focus on the present moment. I work with individuals to explore the root causes of their anxiety, identify unhelpful thought patterns, and develop effective coping strategies.

By drawing on various approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based techniques, it is possible to become more aware of your thoughts and bodily sensations so that you can respond to anxiety in healthier, more intentional ways. Exposure therapies, used carefully and at a pace that feels safe, can also help reduce avoidance behaviors by gradually confronting contexts that trigger anxiety.

With a relational and person-centered approach, I will support you in creating a space where you feel heard and empowered to reduce anxiety’s grip on your life.

  • Depression can leave you feeling stuck, disconnected, and uncertain about the future. My intention in therapy is to create a collaborate space where you can explore your struggles with depression without judgment and work toward renewed hope and motivation. Recovering from depression is possible, and I'll provide support and guidance and assist you every step of the way.

  • Grief is a deeply personal journey, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. The loss of a loved one, a marriage, or even a job can be emotionally devastating.

Although grief is a natural response to loss, when feelings of grief are continuously overwhelming or begin to interfere with your daily life, it can be beneficial to seek help from a professional. My intention is to create a supportive environment where you can navigate this difficult time while developing resilience and finding a sense of meaning in life after loss.

  • I have decades of experience supporting soldiers, veterans, and military family members to navigate the unique challenges of military family life, including frequent moves, deployments, reintegration after service, and the emotional toll these changes take on families.

Therapy can provide a safe and supportive space to address these stressors, strengthen emotional resilience, and learn to foster healthier family dynamics.

  • Untreated psychological disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can wreak havoc on individuals and families. If you or someone you know is struggling with PTSD, ongoing professional treatment is vital and is one of my specializations.

Trauma can profoundly affect your sense of safety, trust, and well-being. If you're experiencing symptoms of PTSD or are struggling with the emotional aftermath of trauma - be it physical trauma, emotional trauma, sexual trauma, combat trauma, or early childhood trauma - therapy can help you find healing. I specialize in trauma-focused therapies that integrate CBT, exposure therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches to help you process traumatic experiences in a safe, structured way. Mindfulness techniques, for example, can help you reconnect with your body and emotions, allowing you to reduce the intensity of flashbacks, hypervigilance, and intrusive thoughts.

Together, we will work to process painful experiences while strengthening your ability to stay grounded in the present, develop coping strategies to restore your sense of control and safety, and foster resilience and healing.

  • Are you experiencing mood swings, crying spells, or feelings of resentment after the birth of a new baby?

Feeling sad or irritable shortly after childbirth (sometimes called “the baby blues”) is incredibly common, affecting many new mothers. But for some women, postpartum depression becomes debilitating, making it difficult to bond with their new babies or deal with the stresses of parenthood. If you or someone you love is experiencing postpartum depression, receiving support from a psychologist may help.

The transition to motherhood can be overwhelming, especially when compounded with feelings of sadness, exhaustion, or emotional numbness. If you’re struggling with postpartum depression, therapy can provide a safe and nonjudgmental space to process your feelings and explore ways to nurture your mental health.

Together, we will create a plan to help you manage stress, improve your mood, and support your emotional well-being.

  • Psychotherapy for aging issues focuses on helping individuals navigate the emotional, psychological, and social challenges that can arise as they age. It addresses concerns such as coping with physical decline, dealing with loss or grief, managing retirement transitions, maintaining relationships, and finding meaning in later life.

Through therapy, older adults can gain tools to improve mental health, enhance well-being, and develop strategies to cope with aging-related changes, fostering resilience and a sense of purpose.

  • If you feel like you're having trouble controlling your emotions or you're unable to move past a specific event, then you might benefit from talking with a compassionate professional. I offer clinical psychology services and strive to provide solutions and support that bring balance and peace of mind.

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I offer a compassionate, person-centered approach to therapy that draws on a variety of therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), trauma therapy, exposure therapy, and mindfulness techniques. My goal is to work collaboratively with you to address your unique challenges and help you achieve lasting change. My approach is person-centered and relational—creating a space where you feel truly heard, respected, and supported.

Together, we will explore the root causes of your concerns, develop strategies for healing, and work toward fostering emotional well-being and resilience.

Let's Talk

Everyone deals with difficult events in life, but no one should have to struggle alone in silence. I know that getting help with mental and emotional challenges is hard for some people, so I'll try to make our time together as comfortable as possible by giving you my focus, respect, and support.

Psychotherapy, as I practice it, is a collaborative process. My intent is to build a relationship with you where you feel free to talk about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, along with your life situation, in order to help you overcome problems that are getting in the way of your ability to pursue the goals you wish to pursue.

Psychotherapy usually leads to improved relationships, healthy solutions to specific problems, and significant increases in mental clarity and emotional balance. I am interactive in psychotherapy, practicing a model of treatment that is relational (interactive) and integrated with CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and exposure therapies.

I intend to serve as your psychologist, which includes keeping you informed about advances in psychological science that may be relevant to you and your concerns and models of treatment applicable to your problems, particularly those that have been supported by empirical research.  If you're ready to meet with a psychologist, then contact me for your telehealth appointment.
